The problem

New source of adult stem cells for regenerative medicine

The Curileum team has identified a new source of multipotent adult stem cells in the lower part of the gut for regenerative medicine.

Stem cells found at the transition zone of two developmental tissues – called the anorectal transition zone (ATZ) – have the capacity repair and restore function to damaged and diseased tissues.

Our scientists have demonstrated using in vivo models that ATZ stem cells heal perianal fistulas and generate new tissue in the liver and pancreas allogeneic (non-self) environments.

Ability to differentiate into any cell type The first adult stem cells with the ability to differentiate into any cell type (currently only possible for embryonic stem cells).
Harvested from the patient’s own bowel Harvested from the patient’s own bowel, resulting in no risk of rejection and no ethical concerns.
